Burgundy (Bourgogne) is synonymous with the wine of course but there's a lot more to discover in this region than just the wine. It consists of the Departments of Côte-d'Or, Nièvre, Saône-et-Loire and Yonne.
It's very much a region of half-timbered houses in the villages and magnificent chateaux. The cuisine is excellent cuisine being, of course, the home of boeuf bourguignon and naturally it's very much a wine region.
The additional difficulty in reaching the region means that there are fewer tourists around but don't think that means that there are fewer attractions for you to see.
Amongst the collection of Les Plus Beaux Villages in this region are Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, Noyers-sur-Serein, Saône-et-Loire, Semur-en-Brionnais, Yonne and Vézelay.
It's very poorly served by airports and your best bet is probably Paris which has good TGV connections to the region.
